Thankful Theism vs Deadly Deism

The academic year ended with Cornhill’s Expository Ministry Conference. The highlight of this for me was Peter Adam’s teaching. Peter was speaking on the subject of ‘Thankful Theism vs Deadly Deism’. Peter very pointedly, yet very warmly, exposed an attitude of ‘practical deism’ in much of our thinking, whereby we confess with our mouths that we believe in God’s ongoing sovereign control of his world, and yet practically live in ways which contradict our confession as we seek to do things in our strength.

In place of this, Peter was calling us all to live in humble, prayerful, and thankful reliance of our great and gracious God. It was a very welcome reminder, and I hope it will be one which sticks with me for the rest of my life and ministry.
